Description

Le Coste di Monforte is located in the south of the Barolo area. The vineyards are arranged like an amphitheatre with the Alta Langa river as the stage. A richly captivating and picturesque piece of landscape in the Piedmont.

The winery, which was founded by Diego Conterno in Monforte d'Alba between 2000 and 2003, is actually much older. Diego had already been active for 20 years with his cousins Claudio Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino. Today he is helped by his son Stefano. The vineyards grow Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Nascetta. Since 2006, the vineyards have been cultivated organically and partly biodynamically. Only since 2017 have all wines been certified organic and since the 2019 vintage also DEMETER (biodynamic).

His Barolo le Coste di Monforte, is one with great finesse. 2018 was a very wet year. The many snow and heavy rain showers in January somewhat compensated for the drought of the previous year, but together with the rapidly rising temperatures in May, this caused problems in the orchard for many farmers. September, on the other hand, provided the perfect ripening situation for the Nebbiolo grapes with warm days and cool nights. With the choice for a late harvest, only in the second week of October, the 2018 Barolo is one of elegance with a well-balanced acidity and pronounced aromas. The well-known anise in the nose and the so recognizable roses and cherries of the Barolo. Nicely firmly embodied and with beautiful ripe tannins and yet still so charming. Softer than the well-known 2013 and 2016 Barolos but with a quality of far, far above average.
