Domaine L'Ancienne Cure is located in Bergerac, a wine region in the south west of France. 'Sud-Ouest' is the umbrella term for a huge amount of different wine regions in that beautiful corner of France. It sometimes causes some geographical confusion, because in this case Bergerac is simply located directly below Bordeaux.
The wine growing also seems to be very similar to that of the famous neighbour, with the same planting of grape varieties. This overlap can also be seen at the Domaine L'Ancienne Cure, a neatly raked but organically working company.
The white grapes used are Sauvignon, Semillon, Muscadelle, Chenin and Ondenc, and for reds Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec are used.
The company is run by Christian Roche and his family, who have been at the helm for quite some time and once took over the company from his parents. During that period he made the switch to (certified since 2007) organic farming, and the mentality in the cellar has also changed. For example, for a number of years now they have been making the 'Ca Sulfit' line, where intervention in the process is kept to a minimum and - you guessed it - no sulphites are added, not even during bottling. The winery now cultivates 50 hectares of vines.
We fell head over heels in love with some sweet wines Christian makes, from grapes from the wine region 'Monbazillac'. The region produces lush, ripe fruity, (fresh) sweet white wines with 'pouriture noble' affected grapes ('noble rot', look it up!), almost like equal Sauternes. See our current offering below!
