Description

Elegant, intense and complex Châteauneuf du Pape. Powerful, full of fruit, with a very nice freshness, certainly for a Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Harmonious and yet with a stately grace. Nose full of dark fruit and herbs, voluptuous mouthfeel with a very long finish. To open now or to leave in the cupboard for a few years, both are allowed. Certainly one for the long dark evenings, with game, red meat or strong cheeses.
Domaine de Villeneuve is located in the northernmost part of the Châteauneuf du Pape. The terroir of Les Vieilles Vignes is very diverse as the vineyards lie precisely on quite specific old, geological boundaries. The different micro-plots consist of mixtures of red clay, silt, Rhône pebbles, sand of maritime origin from more than millions of years ago, light yellow clay, sedimentary deposits rich in minerals and it doesn't even stop there. The age of the vines also varies from 40 years to more than 100 years old.
Villeneuve was acquired by Stanilas Wallut in 1993 from the noble Roy de Blicquy family. Since then, he has striven to make the very best wines of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, in a completely biodynamic way. Step by step, they are also increasingly moving towards vin nature. Spontaneous fermentation, minimal added sulphites and as little intervention as possible in the wine cellar.
  • Country / Region: France / Chateauneuf du Pape (Rhône)
  • Grape variety: 70% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah, 4% Cinsault, 2% Clairette
  • In the vineyard: Domaine de Villeneuve is located in the northernmost part of the Châteauneuf du Pape. Very diverse terroir consisting of different micro-plots. Old vines ranging from 40 years to over 100 years old. The harvest is entirely by hand.
  • In the cellar: Spontaneous fermentation. Grape varieties are pressed separately with a vertical press after which ensures a gentle treatment of the grapes and a slow pressing which ensures the most beautiful juice. Then the grape juice is mixed together. Maturation sur-lie between 18 to 24 months in concrete vats of 51 hl. This way the freshness and the dark fruit of the wine are preserved.
  • Quality mark: Ecocert & Biodyvin
