The Morgon Côte du Py is the most famous wine of Foillard. Within the cru Morgon there is 1 famous hill and that is the Côte du Py. The best vineyards (wines) come from the Côte du Py.
The Gang Without Sulfite, also called the Gang of 4 (some people call it the Gang of 5 or even 6, depending on who you ask), consists of Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, Guy Breton and Jean-Paul Thévenet. These pioneers/friends are followers of Jules Chauvet, and started producing natural wines in Beaujolais in the mid-80s. As honest and pure as possible.
Making wine from old vines, no chemical pesticides, late picking, good sorting of the grapes, no chaptalization, no filtration, no additives and minimal or no sulfite added. The style of Jean Foillard is at odds with the many tutti frutti Beaujolais (Primeur) wines that taste of bubblegum and banana. The wines of Jean Foillard are characterized by a full elegant style of Gamay. Clean, deep structure, complex and yet silky soft. More comparable to a classy Bourgogne Pinot Noir.
In 1980 Jean Foillard took over the domain from his father. Most of the Foillard vineyards are located on the famous hill Côte du Py and is the pride of Morgon. The soil of Côte du Py contains granite and 'schist'.
